Club History Ice hockey started in the city of Newcastle in the 1970s, at the Wharf Road rink under Newcastle West's 'The Store' complex. Originally the Newcastle Red Wings, the Red Wings were part of national leagues of the time. Due to instability there were several variations of these leagues. The Red Wings became the North Stars in 1981 and were leading the national 'Super League' at the time when the Newcastle ice rink went into liquidation.

The club has grown to such a level that for it to continue to function effectively it needs the active involvement of more members in the day to day running of competitions, promotion and development programs.

Much of this does not require ice hockey expertise but more a willingness to contribute a little time to relieve the burden on the main club committee.

At the moment the committee is “too busy working in the business than on the business”. The committee needs to have the time and energy to devote itself to ensuring the club is growing and meets best practices. Growth of the club, particularly from the grass roots will ensure the future prosperity of the sport in not only the Newcastle sporting landscape but also state wide and nationally.

Some of you may have already been approached by committee members about various functions involving competition. Expect a little more of this persuasion over the coming weeks. We are not asking you to take over the club; just help to run a small portion of it. To that end the committee has been devoting time to set out a handbook as a guide to what to do for each job, but there are some duties that will just need a group of people to make a decision on how they want their comp to run.

Open A and Open B teams will be required to put up at least one member as a representative to be part of a sub committee to run their own respective competitions. Any issues that arise from those competitions during the course of the season will be dealt with first by that sub committee.

Please don’t shy away when asked to help. This is your club and it is your competition. Be a part of making it better.

Northstars Golf Day 23rd August 2010

golf_day_3

The AIHL season draws to an end with our team already having secured a place in the finals. The Northstars golf day is a fun day to meet the players away from their comfort zone on the ice. Some of us might even show them up on the fairways.

Even if you don’t the 4 man Ambrose game allows for “once a year hackers” to be part of a team that competes for the honour of golf day champions. Get a team together or just register your interest as a single player. We will put you into a team and are sure you’ll have a great day. It’s not a day for pro golfers; it’s a day for all to have fun. You only need to play by two mottos

If you hit it hard it will go somewhere” and “Every shot gives somebody pleasure

Winter Competition Season 2

The updated team lists and draw are available from the “Download Information” tab.

You must be registered and paid up to play.

The same is true for the in house training that runs on Monday evenings at 7pm after development. To take advantage of the experience and skills of AIHL imports Pete Cartwright, Blair Tassone, Brian Bales and Chris Belanger.

Why have the terms of trade changed?

This question has been asked in recent times in regards to invoices for the second winter competition.

The answer relates to the committee’s strategy to GST de-register the club. A line in the sand has been drawn to do this at the end of the present winter in house and representative seasons.

To achieve this and sign off on all the accounts and paperwork required, the treasurer needs to have the transactions for the winter competition completed.

As a result, in the future the services provided by the club will not have GST added to the cost. It will require some changes to how members register in the future but this will not be an onerous change.

Only Atoms Tournament

The Only Atoms tournament was a great success with teams competing from the Bears, Blacktown, Canterbury, Norwest, Erina, Liverpool and of course our own Northstars. From the perspective of the Northstars team, the players took advantage of sharing goal keeping responsibilities. Contrary to what you would think, they were all keen to try it out.

There were also a couple of tooth fairies who took to the ice to try and intimidate the opposition, but the wings provided more mirth than terror.

Congratulations and thanks to Dawn Watt and many volunteers who made the weekend a fantastic success.

Winter Representative Season

We move into the last third of the winter competition with Bantams leading their league and our Womens, Midget and ECSL teams within the top 3 teams of their comps, but for even those teams the competition is tight. Hence the coaches of those teams are feeling comfortable with the progress of their teams.

The Atoms continue to improve with a spirited 5 - 3 loss to the Rhinos over the weekend. As coach of this group, I am extremely proud of their development and even more their positive attitude. Every game ends with smiles on young faces knowing they have achieved something new and better when they step out onto the ice.

Northstars Toy Drive

Please support this wonderful cause in providing toys for the sick children at the John Hunter Children's Hospital. This is an initiative of import, Chris Belanger, and donations can be made via the HISS proshop.
